About

ABOUT ME

I have been a psychotherapist for over thirty years, and a supervisor to MFT trainees and interns for over fifteen. In my work I am continually moved by the courage, beauty and expansiveness of the human spirit, and its capacity to love and heal.

The circumstances of my life have afforded me the opportunity of traveling widely, and of living in diverse cultures. I was born in India, moved to South America when I was ten, moved to Canada when I was sixteen, and then to California when I was twenty two. I was able to experience cultures through many different lenses, including that of being a minority. These experiences of having to adapt to diverse circumstances have strengthened my belief that the commonalities in the essential nature of humans are greater than the differences that their contexts create.

SERVICES

PSYCHOTHERAPY

In therapy, I strive to maintain an openness and curiosity about people. I borrow from many theoretical orientations, life experiences and common sense, in order to honor the unique needs and specialness of each client. My goal is to provide a safe, compassionate, loving environment for clients to introspect, learn and thrive.

CONSULTATION FOR THERAPISTS

My main focus is to support therapists to excel at their craft and to be emotionally healthy. This way both the therapists and their clients can thrive.

Research has repeatedly shown that the relationship between client and therapist is the most important factor in determining the outcome of therapy. Due to the predominant focus on the client, therapists often minimize their subjective experience and fail to attend to their own process. They may ignore their own feelings, such as isolation, emotional depletion, vicarious trauma, helplessness and fear of making mistakes. The work could also trigger subconscious or unresolved psychological factors for the therapist. All of this can adversely affect the efficacy of the therapeutic process as well as the emotional, physical and spiritual well being of the therapist.  However, not only can such adverse consequences be avoided, but the therapeutic process can be greatly enhanced by therapists making it a practice to attend to their subjective experience in sessions.

In my consultations, I aspire, among other things, to help therapists gain clarity of their internal responses, by integrating cognitive, emotional and sensate information. This allows therapists to deepen their understanding of themselves, and strengthen their capacity to become aware of and trust their intuition. This process of understanding the self can actually increase a therapist's skill in relating to the subjective experience of clients, which can then lead to deeper connection, and more effective therapy.
